2025 Polished Plaster Tadelakt
Tadelakt is a plastering technique using lime typical of Marrakech and other areas of North Africa. For over a thousand years, this ancient technique has traditionally been used primarily in Turkish baths (hammams), riads, palaces, and mosques, but also in wells and murals with moisture problems. Its main characteristic is its ability to create a smooth, waterproof, semi-gloss, or shiny surface, which can adopt various shades, from white to the famous ochre or red characteristic of Marrakech’s buildings.
In a historical context, Tadelakt symbolises much more than a construction technique; it is an element of Moroccan cultural identity. In addition to its durability, this technique has a sophisticated and unique aesthetic that has endured through time and been rediscovered in modern times.
The Tadelakt is a coating of lime plaster, which is sealed and waxed. The making of this prestigious lime is burned and handcrafted like it was produced over a thousand years ago.
It is the most exclusive and expensive of all polished plaster variants. Today, it is commonly used in homes in waterproof areas like bathrooms.
The Tadelakt finish is an alive surface that constantly interacts with the environment. It is practically water repellent and hydrophobic, antiseptic (prevents the growth of mould, fungi, and bacteria), smooth, semi-gloss to a high gloss, with a touch similar to the skin and with unique and unparalleled beauty.
This stucco is applied in two layers with a trowel on prepared base coats and primer. It is then compressed and polished by hand. It is then impregnated with a solution and waxed several times.
The Tadelakt is 100% natural without chemicals; its extraction and manufacturing leave a low ecological footprint.
I have completed a specialist course with Venezia Stucco and am now an accredited applicator of Tadelakt Polished Plaster.
