About CAO

My name is Tal Baron. I am registered with the Architektenkamer Berlin, ARB, RIBA, and the Israeli Architect Association.

The pursuit of simplicity drives the practice—the quest for what is characterised as the minimum and tailored to each client and space. Communication is based on open dialogues with the client, the site, the budget, existing buildings, and the intended functions.  We work together efficiently and positively to create beautiful projects relevant to the context.

The practice provides a full architectural service tailored to each client and project's requirements. Its strong focus is on the design's suitability, high-quality details, and coherent project management from concept to completion.

Method

Each project starts by observing and revealing what is already there.
A dialogue between existing parameters and the client's new requirements and ambitions directs a process organic to problem-solving through research and renewal.

The main elements I consider are:
Sensitivity is key to creating a timeless design that thrives on reusing and implementing contemporary ideas with attention to detail, materiality, texture, and spatial experience.
Creativity is born from knowledge, resourcefulness, observation, and a collaborative and adaptive approach to finding the right solution in the context.
Practicality is acquired through extensive experience in the profession and a lifetime spent exploring the qualities of space, contributing to achieving a timeless atmosphere rich in quality and spatial experience.

Bio

Tal Baron is an architect and designer registered with the ARB and RIBA, the Architektenkammer Berlin, and the Israeli Architects Association.

As a first-year student, I was inspired by Shigeru Ban's works, including curtain wall houses and paper tube structures, and his approach to crisis solving when providing quick and easy modular structures to assist affected areas and make a social difference. I went to Tokyo to see some of the works firsthand and visit the studio and some of the completed projects. During my time there, I was invited to present my work at the PechaKucha night in Tokyo and had the chance to meet Tadao Ando, who lectured after my presentation. His diagrams still inspire me to understand depth and simplicity.

On my return to Israel, I continued my studies at Bezalel- Academy for Arts and Design in Jerusalem. I then moved to Berlin under the student exchange program and was invited to stay at UdK Berlin to complete my studies.

Upon arriving in London, I worked for renowned practices like dRMM, BGY, and Heatherwick Studio. I commenced my practice as CAO in 2014, collaborating with other professionals such as Ben Thompson, Neil Davies, Powell Tuck Associates, Spinocchia Freund, and Westgreen Construction.

I was always focused on fundamental problems related to space, form and function, proportions, light, and materials and endeavoured to explore modest, practical, sustainable, and simple ways to find solutions.

The works of Louis Kahn inspire me, and one of the most profound books I read is ‘Deconstructing the Kimbell’ (Michael Benedikt). The analysis of the structure, and geometrical shapes, their interfaces, and their becoming into spatial movement, light and material makes this book one of my favourite essays.

I worked on various projects ranging in scale sizes and many building typologies, including artist studios, offices, and hotels. However, private residences were always given prime importance. The key element of our studio work is minimal and sustainable aesthetics in the designs.
